Alpine Living – Journeying Within The Alps

Students will gain a sense of being able to function effectively in an alpine environment, which will lead to developing an emotional connection.

1.

Skills

Students display a range of skills that enable them to effectively function in the Alpine environment.

These include:

  • Independent living  skills (food preparation and consumption, water collection and consumption, effective shelter construction.
  • Technical skills associated with the mode of activity used in the Alps. (e.g. bushwalking, rock climbing, bike riding)

2.

Comfort Levels

Students display a level of comfort within the alpine environment that enables them to function outside of a self-management role.

Some of the indicators of operating outside of self are:

  • Effectively engaging and working with others in a group environment.
  • Take on and effectively work in a number of different roles within the group.
  • Increasing personal knowledge and understanding of the alpine environment so as to reduce the unknown component.

3.

Connection with the Alps

Students will gain an understanding of the complexity of the systems that function in the alpine environment. The combination of the knowledge and the sensory experience will lead to an emotional connection toward an appreciation of the Alpine environment.

This will be evident by:

  • The care taken to follow the “leave no trace” principles.
  • Level of engagement whilst improving alpine environment knowledge.
  • Extent to which an appreciation of the Alpine environment is developed.

A spectacular mountain learning environment

Students attending have easy access to some of Victoria's best alpine country - the Bogong High Plains, for program activities.
