Outdoor Residential Schools Network

The Department of Education Outdoor Residential Schools Network supports students to grow in a variety of meaningful ways and engage in curriculum and learning unique to these schools’ contexts and settings.

Attending an outdoor residential school gives students the opportunity to engage in hands-on, immersive learning that fosters critical thinking and reflection. Comprising schools that support students across Primary, Secondary and Specialist sectors, each of these learning settings encourages students to think independently, solve problems creatively, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them whilst building important relationships with their peers. The learning opportunities offered through these schools also enhances academic growth, supporting improvement in literacy, numeracy, and overall cognitive development through practical, real-world activities.

Beyond academia, the outdoor residential schools help students build confidence and resilience. By facing new challenges in supportive and dynamic environments, students develop an enhanced sense of accomplishment and self-efficacy, which further strengthens their belief in themselves.
